Frequently Asked Questions and privacy policy

  • Do I need an anemone to keep clown fish? It is not required to keep an anemone when keeping clown fish. This is a common misconception, however, an anemone may be required to stop some clown fish from hosting other corals (e.g. Euphyllia) and distressing them.

  • Do I need to keep corals to keep a marine tank? It is not required to keep corals if you want a marine tank. It can also be easier to keep a fish only system rather than a coral/ reef tank.

  • What salinity/ salt level do I keep my marine tank at? This varies depending on your system. For fish only tanks, we recommend your salinity should be kept at 1.016, however, reef systems should be kept between 1.025 and 1.026

  • What is the best way to check my salinity? Most people check their salinity using a hydrometer. However, unless calibrated correctly, this method can prove inaccurate. The best way to check your salinity accurately is by using a good quality refractometer.

  • Is keeping marine a lot more difficult than tropical? Marine tanks can be made as hard or easy as you wish. While it is true that some marine tanks are harder than tropical systems, fish only tanks are a lot easier than reef setups. A good routine is a simple way to make this hobby easier.

  • What is the best way to treat white spot? Currently, the only proven methods to remove white spot are hypo-salinity and copper. Unfortunately both of these methods are not reef safe so Christal Clear Waters recommends setting up a small quarantine tank.

  • How Often do I need to do a water change? CCW recommends doing a 20% water change weekly to help maintain stable perimeters.
